About the role, Your Impact

We are hiring a talented Environmental Scientist V professional to join the Water Resources team in our Crystal Lake office. The Environmental Scientist will be an experienced water resources professional, knowledgeable in the many facets of stormwater, floodplain, watershed, water quality, and open water dynamics. Responsible for working across multiple practices within Baxter & Woodman and specializing directly in water quality and surface water management projects associated with assessment, development, design, and permitting aspects to facilitate client needs in planning, improvement, or restoration. The candidate will possess and apply a broad knowledge of environmental principles to solve complex problems. Also possesses knowledge of related fields and areas of operation which affect or are affected by own environmental field. The candidate should make independent decisions and provide technical assistance on projects when necessary. Oversee the work of others and assign work to less experienced scientists and engineers. Manage large and complex projects involving special skills and multi-disciplinary teams. Strong relationships with clients and participate actively in business development. Acts as a client manager and deals heavily with client relations.

What your day-to-day will look like

  • Assist in the development of Baxter & Woodman’s approach to facilitate specialty water resources projects in waterway recovery, water quality improvement, sediment management, and watershed management in streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands, etc.
  • Manage necessary staff to assist in, and complete water resources projects in rural and urban environments.
  • Coordinate with a multi-disciplinary team to work across the firm and coordinate other departmental components into scaled projects.
  • Oversee resources needed to instrument, monitor, and collect data or samples to assist in the diagnosis of issues for water resources or related projects.
  • Ability to develop new clientele and projects utilizing available resources and/or assist in the acquisition of additional projects through existing clientele.
  • Facilitate scientific studies or analyses as appropriate to support departmental needs.
  • Support engineering and permitting needs to implement ecological, restoration, enhancement, or other waterway and water quality improvement projects.
  • Identify and engage in new markets and sector approaches.

Education/Certification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in water resources, hydrology, watershed management, or water resources engineering, limnology or related science or engineering degree.

Must-haves, what you will bring

  • Minimum 15 years of experience.
  • Proven experience with a multitude of clientele, from public, quasi-public, and private sectors.
  • Understanding of current water resources market and trends.
  • Experience with water quality monitoring approaches, instrumentation, and evaluating water quality data.
  • Ability to coordinate scientific principles and study components into engineered environments.
  • Proficiency of a variety of water resources modeling platforms.
  • Understanding of the Midwest municipal market and clients.
  • Ability to lead proposals and win work.
  • Experience with permitting pathways for multiple agencies and regulatory bodies.
  • Experienced at public engagement, speaking, and presentations.

Compensation: The pay range for this role is $115,000-$130,000. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, and certifications.
