The main responsibility of a Baggage Handler/Unjammer is to assist the airlines with making sure each of their bags is expedited to their appropriate piers. In addition, clear jams throughout the system and look for lost or damaged items. Baggage Handlers/jammers utilize graphic displays on a monitor to locate baggage jams, overloads and any issues that may be a hindrance to the operation. This helps to efficiently resolve problems and maintain customer relations when luggage is late, lost, and or damaged.
The Baggage Handler is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, cleaning/maintenance chemicals, cold and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Employees may work on an airport ramp around airline vehicles and heavy equipment.
